Tuesday, July 12, Part VII - 2 straw houses

This is an awful picture to start a blog with, but it is Ana's good-bye picture although she will spend part of this morning with us before Pierlo drives her to nearby train station.  She will get to see part of the Tour de France before returning to the States.

Suzi and I do the cooking today and though our dessert turns out well, I knew it would make a mess.  The cleanup is difficult as the batter spatters all over the wall in front of the sink.  Oh, well.  One can always clean!

It seems to me this was the day Suzi made chapatis (she spent some time in an Indian ashram).  The flour is different from that she was used to, so she has all of the chapatis rolled out and then they crumble before she can cook them.  Rico helps us redo them and we have them ready when the rest of the lunch is ready.

I think these are the zucchini that we throw away in the States or give to the neighbors.  Here, every one is used even if it is packed away in salt brine to use during the winter.  This might be a good time to explain that Dominique's garden is actually shared by a few other families.  I'm not sure what the exact agreement is, but we were visited by a couple of different people who came to pick something while we were working.  One woman explains that she comes once in a while to help weed, but this didn't happen while I was there.  Even so, the garden is so big that Dominique seems to be able to put some of the veggies away for the winter.

Is this a baseball bat?

Dominique had a very different grater than I have seen.  We used it often to grate beets as well as zucchini.  One of the zucchini recipes we liked was made with creme fraiche.  I have been to a cool kitchen place in an old building here in Paris.  They have EVERYTHING one could possibly want to use for any kind of cooking.  I wanted to buy out the whole store and haven't dared to go back since I found it at the beginning of my visit here.

Everything gets used here even the tops of onions that Pierlo especially loves.  This is a silly picture where one of the enormous zucchinis fell on top of a bottle cap.

I take a break to go out and document what is going on with the house.  Here is where I see that the plastic has not been removed but indeed incorporated into the structure.  Can anyone explain this??

Emily, maybe you know?

I don't think this a break but rather each one is screwing in a needed bolt or nail.

Here Marion has a difficult time squeezing in to do the job.

As I watch Emily's movements, I'm glad I made the decision not to work up here.  In the next life I will start Wwoofing as soon as I reach 18!

I think some glue as well as screws are used to put these two halves of each crosspiece together.

This looks more like a break.

Apparently there are enough people on house so Rico takes on a gardening job - mulching the tomatoes. It's a little difficult as the straw is in a huge bag (like those Pierlo's daughter, Marion and I used to put away the straw in the neighbor's barn.  Also, as one steps down into the straw here, there is a rather deep hole.  I had this job later and the first time I stepped in, I wasn't expecting it to be so deep.

Then Rico fills the wheelbarrow and wheels it down to the end of the garden to spread it.

During a visit to the "toilette seche," I find a cute drawing:  Man is the only mammal who realizes he is one.

We have been eating lots of this lettuce.  There are three different kinds.  Notice also the edible flowers.

Here Rico comes to the rescue to help us finish the chapatis.  It's not easy cooking for18 people but we love the experience.  However, it makes me realize (as I already knew) that I don't want to do it for a living.

Once when I go out in the garden I find this box where the iron, cardboard, and paper are kept for recycling.

This tent has been put up as a former Wwoofer is expected soon and there is no more room in the cabin.

This seems to be either a water rest or a planning con-flab of some sort.  It is pretty hot but Vivian's dog still has the energy to play with her piece of wood.

After lunch everyone is tired.

It's Joe who takes the green chair today.  Josh, Annalise, and Vivian's dog seem to be happy just to stretch out on the ground.  They all need this rest, even the dog is tired now!  I think this workday ended early as well.

Looks like Josh and Annelise have finally reached the need for a rest.
