Saturday, July 16 - Part XI - 2 straw houses

Oops!  We drive over early to Castillon to pick up Pierlo to do the regular shopping trip to Bagnères before going to work at the other house.   As we try to pull out of the parking space at home, we find we again have a flat tire.   Since we had no way of pumping it up, we limped along slowly knowing we shouldn't be on the road.  As we move along more slowly than usual, I find myself hoping those tires will soon be fixed.

This was Marthe's first look at the market in Bagnères de Bigorre.  She and Joe had breakfast at the market, but I had already eaten earlier and made a few purchases while they sat in a café and had a coffee.

Here is the bakery near the market where they bought a "treat" as our usual breakfast is cereal.

I love the large potted plants at several places in the streets where the outdoor market is held.

Marthe looks for a time before deciding.

While they are eating, I go into the covered market and take a picture of the flower stand.  That 45 euros translates into probably about at least 60 dollars for that little dish garden!

Soon we leave for Dominique's where I take on the job of mulching the rest of the tomatoes and later the squash as well.  I have a bit of trouble with the deep hole, as I mentioned in an earlier blog when Rico had this task.  But, I step carefully and manage to keep filling up and emptying my wheelbarrow.

Meantime Annelise and Marthe continue the contruction of the few fermettes that are left.

More weeding and more treasures to be found now that the plants have lost some of their outer leaves.

This is apparently a different variety of sunflower than the one with more golden leaves.  I remember Patrick has a beautiful picture with these, but at least this gives you a sense of what they look like.  Perhaps I need to take some lessons in Adobe as well as the Lasell course in photography.  I still can't turn off the backlighting in my camera and it cramps my style!  Just too many electronic devices in this modern world!

Last night found the arrival of a new Wwoofer, Alice, a friend of Suzi and Emily.  She and Emily did the cooking today and they had asked me earlier to pick the biggest zucchini I could find as they wanted to stuff them.  There are yellow ones as well as green ones.  BIG ones!

Today is also the day for hummus.  Absolutely delicious!

Since someone is vegan, they make some with cheese and some without.  I also think they put in some eggplant.  YUM, YUM!

After the dishes are done, I take some pictures in the cabin.  I took this picture of the bunk beds from the bed Emily and Suzi share.

The space is small and last night someone slept on the floor.  Josh left early this morning so that frees up the upper bunk bed for Alice.

Right next to the beds is a table and then across from that the stove used in the winter.  Next to the stove is a large cabinet that hold spices, sugar and other cooking supplies.  Actually, the Wwoofing season stops before the cold weather for both Dominique and Pierlo.

Probably a planning chat.

Here Simon, the Englishman you met in an earlier blog.  He has turned into a permanent Frenchman and now a paid expert in straw houses.  He lends a hand as a friend and stays for lunch as well.

At home it is cold and windy so I hide out in the caravan with my sweater on.  Pierlo and Marion go to see the mare and I take what I think are some of the better pictures of my time here.

I go out to show Marion the pictures and then she "poses" for more.  I like the first ones better just because they aren't posed and seem so natural.  You can see the relationship between Marion and her horse growing with the passing days.
